Day four of the King’s Baton Relay in Wales will highlight the region’s dramatic landscapes and strong connection to the sea, as the Baton travels from the heights of Penrhyn Quarry to the coastal waters of Porthdinllaen.
The day will begin with a baton bearer descending the iconic zip wire at Penrhyn Quarry, carrying the Baton across one of North Wales’ most striking landscapes and setting the tone for a day that celebrates both natural beauty and community pride.
The Relay will then continue west to Porthdinllaen beach, where an afternoon programme of activity will focus on marine conservation and community engagement.
The event begins at 12:00pm, bringing together community champions, volunteers and Team Wales representatives to celebrate the heritage and importance of the local marine environment. Baton bearers will carry the Baton along the beach and into the water, reflecting the deep cultural and environmental ties between Welsh communities and the sea.
Activities will include a shark and skate eggcase hunt led by Project SIARC volunteers, alongside snorkelling sessions showcasing local seagrass meadows. Participants from North Wales Wildlife Trust and the Seagrass Ocean Rescue project will take part in the water-based activities, highlighting ongoing efforts to protect and restore vital marine habitats.
Young baton bearers will then snorkel across the seagrass meadows before transferring the Baton to an inflatable boat crewed by British Sub-Aqua Club members at approximately 2:30pm. The Baton will then be carried out to sea, marking a symbolic continuation of the Relay along Wales’ coastline.
Rebecca Edwards-Symmons, CEO of Team Wales said:
“This is a truly special moment for Wales, bringing together our landscapes, communities and coastline as part of a global celebration, and showcasing activities like snorkelling, conservation and community participation highlights how sport can connect us to place and inspire future generations.”
Reece Halstead, Ocean Literacy Co-ordinator for Wales at Y Môr a Ni, said:
“Everyone in Wales has a relationship with the sea, whether we realise it or not. It’s fantastic to be working with Team Wales to showcase the connections between sport, nature and our coastal communities through activities such as beachcombing, snorkelling and diving. The more opportunities people have to safely experience our seas, the more likely they are to value and help protect them for future generations.”
