Welsh Weightlifters qualify for 2022 Commonwealth Games
7 athletes join the Team Wales list of qualifiers this summer
The Commonwealth Games Federation have confirmed that seven Team Wales Weightlifters have officially qualified for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Welsh Weightlifters have won over 50 Commonwealth medals since first appearing in the 1954 Vancouver Commonwealth Games, with Gareth Evans winning Wales’s first gold medal at the last Games in Gold Coast, 2018.
The qualifying athletes for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games are:
Hannah Powell (49kg event) Catrin Jones (55kg event) Christie-Marie Williams (64kg event) Faye Pittman (71kg event) Amy Salt (76kg) Michael Farmer (73kg) Jordan Sakkas (109kg).
Ray Williams, Weightlifting Wales Coach said “It gives me great pleasure to officially announce the athletes that will represent Weightlifting Wales at the upcoming Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. We have a mix of experience and future potential within our squad. All have reached the exacting standard required to participate. Each athlete has shown a lot of resilience and determination in what has been a turbulent last couple of years with the pandemic and no face to face events from late 2019 up until early 2022. Our Athletes will be the very best they can be at Birmingham 2022 and we have already started preparations for Victoria 2026 with our crop of talented development athletes. Weightlifting Wales are proud to be part of Team Wales and look forward with much enthusiasm to participating in July-August”.
The Weightlifting competition will be held at the NEC Arena, beginning on Saturday 30th July.
Commonwealth Games Wales CEO, Chris Jenkins said “I’d like to congratulate all the weightlifters who have been confirmed today as part of Team Wales at this summer’s Commonwealth Games. They have worked hard, stayed focused and committed themselves to the tough task of qualifying; now they can focus on the Games. The calibre of athletes produced by Weightlifting Wales, is a credit to the experienced coaches and support staff. With only 100 days to go, we look forward to announcing more Team Wales athletes in the coming weeks.“
Team Wales Chef de Mission Nicola Phillips added “Congratulations to all the athletes that have been selected from Weightlifting Wales. I can remember vividly in Gold Coast when weightlifting won the first Gold for Team Wales. Witnessing Gareth Evans clinch that Gold is one of my fondest sporting moments, and I look forward to watching the athletes enter the competition platform this summer.“
