OBE for Brian Davies, Chef de Mission of Team Wales at Glasgow 2014

Commonwealth Games Wales has congratulated Brian Davies on his well-deserved award of an OBE in the Queens Honours List over the weekend.

As Chef de Mission of Team Wales at the Glasgow 2014 Games, Brian was appointed by Commonwealth Games Wales to ensure an outstanding performance environment was in place to enable the Welsh Team achievements of 36 medals at Glasgow 2014 Games, a team of 234 athletes and just over 100 coaches and support staff across 17 sports.

Brian was brilliantly supported in the Games Village by his deputy Chef de Mission Professor Nicola Phillips and many other team managers, practitioners and medical staff. Brian led the team in Glasgow with great skill and humour and his success is Glasgow has been recognised by this award of an OBE.

Helen Phillips, Chair of Commonwealth Games Wales said: “We are delighted with the news of Brian”s honour, and he is a very worthy recipient of this tremendously prestigious award. He was instrumental in uniting a team of athletes, their coaches and a professional support team which resulted in securing our team’s outstanding performance at Glasgow. We look forward to continuing to work with Brian in his role as Director of Elite Performance of Sport Wales.

“Commonwealth Games Wales is now preparing for the next events, the Samoa Commonwealth Youth Games in September this year and the main Games in Gold Coast Australia in April 2018. The process to appoint next Welsh Chef de Mission for Gold Coast will commence in September 2015. It is a hugely exciting time for us at Commonwealth Games Wales as preparations for Gold Coast are well underway and we will ensure we sustain the positive momentum by working with key partners and build on the success of Glasgow.”

Brian Davies said: “I am absolutely thrilled with this incredible honour. To be recognised in this way is quite unbelievable and emotional. I was so privileged to have been given the opportunity to lead Team Wales at Glasgow 2014 by the Commonwealth Games Board. This award is definitely a worthy recognition for the efforts of all the athletes, coaches, support staff and Board of Directors of Commonwealth Games Wales who all gave 100% commitment before and during the 11 days in Glasgow.”

He added: “Sport in Wales is currently enjoying a wonderful period of success and I”m so proud of the efforts of a whole range of people behind the scenes who do so much to ensure our athletes have the opportunity to perform to the best of their abilities and showcase Wales to the world.”
