Of the 114 athletes selected, 22 are para-athletes, with a strong and balanced team comprising 66 female and 48 male competitors.
The squad features an exceptional level of experience and achievement, including:
- 3 reigning Olympic Champions and 1 Paralympic Champion
- 6 Olympic medallists and 3 Paralympic medallists
- 5 World Champions and 3 World record holders
- 14 returning medallists from the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, including 5 gold medallists
The team reflects the diversity of Welsh sport, with athletes ranging in age from 16 to 73 years old. Among the stories within the squad are married couple Ciara and Lewis Oliva, returning from retirement to compete together in Track Cycling at the Glasgow International Arena, as well as twins, gymnasts Abigail and Emily Roper, making their Commonwealth Games debut.
The announcement comes as Glasgow prepares to host the Games for the second time, having previously welcomed athletes in 2014. On that occasion, Team Wales delivered a standout performance, winning 36 medals across 17 sports.
Team Wales will be led by Chef de Mission Gethin Jones, who will be the spokesperson for the Team in Glasgow; “It is an incredible honour to lead Team Wales this summer in Glasgow and to serve as spokesperson for this talented group of athletes. My role is to support and guide the team, ensuring every athlete has the environment and encouragement they need to perform at their very best on the Commonwealth stage. This group represents the very best of Welsh sport—dedicated, ambitious and proud to wear the red jersey. We are building on the legacy of 2014 with real belief, and I couldn’t be prouder to be part of this team. I can’t wait to see what they achieve in Glasgow.”
Gareth Davies, Chair of Team Wales, added:
“Announcing the team is always a proud moment, not just for the athletes but for everyone involved in making this journey possible. Over the past few years, an enormous amount of work has gone into the planning and delivery behind the scenes, and this team is a reflection of that collective effort across Welsh sport. As Chair of Team Wales, I am incredibly proud of the organisation and all those who have contributed to this moment. Glasgow holds special memories for us, and I am very much looking forward to attending the Games and supporting the team as they represent Wales with pride on the world stage.”
The Cabinet Minister for Culture and Sport Heledd Fychan said:
“We believe in the power of culture and sport to transform lives, and sport plays a crucial role in communities at local clubs and at the international elite level. Team Wales athletes represent the very best in their respective fields and will be an inspiration to everyone across the country both when competing and as ambassadors for our values as a nation. I know the whole of Wales is proud of the team and I wish them the very best of luck.”
Netball have also qualified for the Games, with the squad yet to be announced. Wales are in Pool B with New Zealand, Jamaica, Uganda, Scotland and Trinidad & Tobago.
Glasgow 2026 will also be marking an historical moment for Team Wales, confirming their male and female 3×3 wheelchair basketball teams have qualified for the Commonwealth Games for the first time in history.
With a proud history at the Commonwealth Games and a strong blend of experience and emerging talent, Team Wales heads to Glasgow 2026 ready to compete, connect and inspire.
The nation will once again come together to support its athletes as they take on the world stage this summer.
