Team Wales Announce Chair for Athletes Commission

Commonwealth Games Wales today announce Suzy Drane as Chair for Team Wales Athletes Commission

Suzy Drane is Wales’s most capped netballer and has represented Wales in 125 international matches including 2 Netball World Cups and 4 Commonwealth Games.

Her international career began in 2003 playing for Wales U17 and she went on to win her first senior cap in 2005. She retired last year following a successful 20 year playing career, having played for Celtic Dragons in the National netball Super League and Captain of the Wales national team.

Newly appointed Athletes Commission Chair, Suzy Drane said ‘I am delighted to have been named as Chair of the Athletes Commission. We have an extremely talented group of athletes and between us we have a good breadth and depth of knowledge and experience. I am looking forward to representing the views of the group back to the CGW Board so together we can ensure the voice of the athletes is heard, as we build towards Trinbago 2023 Youth and Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games.’

Suzy has been a lecturer in Sport Development and Performance Sport at Cardiff Met University since 2011 following the completion of a BSc and MSc in Sport Development, and Physical Activity and Health.

Commonwealth Games Wales Chair, Gareth Davies added ‘Suzy is a well-respected individual on and off the field of play. She has proven people skills and together with her experience at several Commonwealth Games, she will undoubtedly create a positive culture and team ethos amongst the exceptional athletes on the Commission.’

Suzy began her Commonwealth Games journey at the 2006 Melbourne Games, and continued through Glasgow 2014, Gold Coast 2018 and Birmingham 2022.

As Chair, she will work alongside Head of Engagement Cathy Williams who is Executive Lead for the Commission, together with the experienced athletes on the AC to ensure key decisions and

recommendations are shared with the CGW Board as Team Wales look towards Trinbago 2023 and Victoria 2026.
