Unveiled on St David’s Day, Gwen is a powerful symbol of Welsh pride, ambition and sporting excellence. A bold, female red dragon, she represents the heart of Team Wales as they prepare for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this summer. One of Gwen’s most distinctive features is her advanced para wings – a bold design which symbolises how adaptation is part of elite sport, reinforcing the message that innovation and resilience are central to success at the highest level.

And there will be plenty of space for Gwen to spread her para wings this summer!  Glasgow 2026 will be the biggest sporting event in the UK this year, running from 23 July to 2 August. The city will be welcoming 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories across the Commonwealth, all set to compete in a world-class programme of 10 sports and six Para sports. With six exciting Para sports on the schedule, taking place across four iconic venues across the city, this will be the largest Para sport programme in Commonwealth Games history.

Gwen made her first public appearance in Glasgow, where she was warmly welcomed by Finnie, the Official Glasgow 2026 mascot. Finnie took Gwen on a lively tour of the city, proudly showing her around iconic spots and locations and giving her a true taste of the host city’s energy and spirit.

Gwen and Finnie were joined by Team Wales star and Paralympian Olivia Breen, adding further excitement to the occasion, which included the opportunity to explore Team Wales House at YOTEL Glasgow and VEGA in the city centre.

The visit offered an early glimpse of the welcoming environment that will support Welsh athletes during the 2026 Games and showcased the strong sense of community that surrounds Team Wales.

Team Wales CEO Rebecca Edwards-Symmons said:

Launching Gwen on St David’s Day makes this moment even more special. She represents who we are as a nation and as a team – proud, inclusive, ambitious, and united. Her para wings highlight that adaptation is part of excellence, and that true sporting success is about performance, not limitation. Seeing Finnie show her around Glasgow and watching her connect with fans has been a fantastic start to her journey.”

Finnie, the Glasgow 2026 mascot, said:

“It was so exciting to finally meet Gwen today – she’s super cool. On our tour as two magical creatures, we spread plenty of love across Glasgow today. I showed Gwen our amazing venues, where all our sports and Para sports will take place and all the amazing spots across the city I’ve adventured to.

Hanging out with Gwen today reminded me how amazing Glasgow is and I just can’t wait to welcome everyone here this summer. It’s going to be an incredible 11 days of sport – the crowd, the noise, the cheers – you’re not going to want to miss it. I’m ready to bring the hype!”

Neil Taylor, General Manager at Yotel, added: “We are absolutely thrilled to be the host venue for Team Wales House for Glasgow 2026.

“Our city lives and breathes big moments, and the Commonwealth Games will be no different, so it feels only right that we’re hosting the fans, friends and family of the athletes travelling from Wales.

“VEGA is going to be a buzzing hub throughout the Games and we can’t wait to welcome guests across the event to make it an experience to remember.”

Following her official launch, Gwen will play a central role in Team Wales’ preparations for Glasgow 2026. She will appear at schools, community events and sporting initiatives across Wales, helping to inspire the next generation of athletes and supporters.
