Commonwealth Games Wales pay tribute to JJ Williams MBE

Commonwealth Games Wales is saddened to hear that John James Williams MBE has died at the age of 72.

JJ Williams represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh in 1970 as John Williams – he would later become known as JJ to avoid a clash of identity with the other John Williams in Wales' rugby team, fullback JPR Williams.

At the 1970 Edinburgh Games, JJ Williams demonstrated his speed with a time of 10.6 seconds in the 100m, as well as competing in the 200m and 4x100m. A year later, he became Welsh sprint champion.

Showing aptitude for athletics with his incredible pace, his speed translated into great finishing ability during his successful career as a winger for Llanelli, Wales and the British and Irish Lions teams.

Three of Williams' children have also represented Wales in athletics, including son Rhys Williams, a European champion hurdler and Commonwealth Games medallist.

JJ Williams was inducted into the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame and awarded an MBE in 2012 for his services to rugby and to charity.

‘’We send our deepest condolences to JJ’s family and friends at this very sad time. I look back very fondly at our conversations over the years and he was not only helpful in giving advice but a true inspiration and sporting legend. He will be sorely missed’’
