Farewell to Chris Jenkins, CGW CEO

Chris Jenkins, former CGW CEO, announced his retirement earlier this year after 17 years, having first joined CGW in 2005 and later becoming CEO in 2010

Chris has worked with Welsh sports for the last five games, and alongside Sport Wales and member sports he has helped to create and build a fair and open selection process and a world class support network for athletes at the Games.

Under Chris’ leadership, CGW shifted its focus from a single event that delivers every four years to ensuring sport is relevant in Wales every day. The transition has led to working with schools across Wales as part of the School Engagement Programme. In addition, a partnership with the University of South Wales has created a number of exciting projects between CGW and USW from fashion design, strength and conditioning to intern placements.

Chris fondly recalls his time at the Delhi games in particular: “It was always a great honour to be invited to lead Team Wales as Chef de Mission. Being Dehli 2020 Chef de Mission was the most challenging and also the most rewarding role I have held. Despite early challenges, the whole experience of the Games hosted by India was a remarkable cultural and sporting experience.“

In addition to the main Games Chris has also worked on four Youth Games in Pune, Isle of Man, Samoa and Bahamas. He has also been an integral part in organising and delivering the Queen’s Baton Relay across Wales ahead of each Games in Manchester, Delhi, Glasgow, Gold Coast and Birmingham.

Whilst Chris is stepping down from his role as CEO, he continues in his role as Vice President for the CGF.
