Emma Finucane

Emma Finucane is a Welsh sprint cyclist from Carmarthen and one of the leading names in world track cycling.
A sprint specialist, Emma rose to global prominence when she became the first British women’s sprint world champion in a decade after winning gold at the 2023 UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Glasgow. She followed that breakthrough with a standout Olympic debut at Paris 2024, where she became the first woman in 60 years to win three medals for Great Britain at a single Olympic Games.
Emma started cycling at the age of eight with her sister through Towy Riders in Wales, initially riding endurance before her sprint potential was identified by the Great Britain Cycling Team. She joined the academy programme in 2018 and rose quickly through the ranks, winning junior medals before breaking through at senior level.
The Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games marked a step-change in Emma’s career, as she won two bronze medals for Team Wales in the Women’s Team Sprint and Individual Sprint. Later that year, she claimed her first elite World Championship medal as part of the Team Sprint squad.
In 2023, Emma became world champion in the Sprint on home soil in Glasgow. She defended that title in 2024 and also helped Great Britain win Team Sprint gold at the World Championships, after earlier becoming Olympic champion in the same event at Paris 2024.
At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Emma teamed up with Katy Marchant and Sophie Capewell to win Women’s Team Sprint gold in a world-record time, before adding bronze medals in both the Keirin and Individual Sprint. Her three-medal haul made her the first British woman since Mary Rand, British track and field athlete, at Tokyo 1964 to win three medals at a single Olympic Games.
Emma continued her success in 2025, winning World Championship silver medals in both the Team Sprint and Keirin. In 2026, she set a new women’s Flying 200m Time Trial world record of 9.759 seconds on her way to the European Sprint title, before going on to dominate the British National Track Championships with gold in the Team Sprint, Sprint and Keirin.
Emma was awarded an MBE in the 2025 New Year Honours for services to cycling.
