Team Wales’ Bowls team were in action twice before the Games were officially opened at the OVO Hydro, with Owen Ross and then the combination of Amy Williams and Lauren Gowen representing their country next door at the SEC.

Ross stepped up first in the Men’s Singles, taking on Pakistan’s Mohammed Ayub Qureshi. The Birmingham 2022 Bronze medallist sailed through the tie, taking the first set 12-5 before romping to victory with a 17-0 victory in the second.

The dominant 2-0 win sets Ross up nicely for his second fixture of the Games against England’s Sam Tolchard on Friday.

Willams and Gowen subsequently stepped up and showed their class against tough Canadian opposition in the form of Emma Boyd and Kelly McKerihen.

The pair of debutants held their nerve and came out on top, securing a strong 9-2 win in the opening set and backing it up with a hard-fought 6-4 victory in the second.

Following the first taste of competition, it was time for Team Wales to proudly enter the OVO Hydro for the Games’ Opening Ceremony.

Flag Bearer Rosie Eccles and Baton Bearer Dan Salmon each had the honour of leading their country into the Opening Ceremony, after being surprised by Team Wales Chef de Mission Gethin Jones with the news the day before.

While Welsh athletes soaked up a hero’s welcome at the Hydro, Team Wales House was vibrant with excitement and pride as a watch party enjoyed the show.

Team Wales was thrilled to collaborate with Browne Jacobson and welcome Molly Stephens to host as we were joined by partners, colleagues and supporters to our home for the Commonwealth Games.
