Commonwealth Games Wales has announced the team of swimmers selected to represent Wales at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa in September.
The seven strong squad has been chosen by Commonwealth Games Wales in collaboration with national representative body Swim Wales based on the athletes” recent performance at various events.
The team includes:
- Dan Davies (Pembrokeshire)
- Emelia Stevenson (Bridgend)
- Joe Clark (Guildford)
- Kathryn Greenslade (Preston)
- Mari Davies (Caernarfon)
- Rebecca Sutton (Bridgend)
- Sophie Evans (Swansea)
Commonwealth Games Wales is the national body responsible for selecting and sending world class athletes to compete for Wales at the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games.
Chris Jenkins, Chief Executive of Commonwealth Games Wales said: “The Commonwealth Youth Games are a great opportunity for our young athletes to gain experience of competing at big events. This will be the first time for many of them to represent Wales in the international sporting arena.
“Team Wales had a very successful Games in the pool in Glasgow last year with a record number of medals won by Welsh swimmers. The event in Samoa will help to develop the
latest generation of talented young swimmers who all have the potential to become sporting stars in the future.”
The team of five females and two males will be accompanied by Stuart McNarry, Head Coach, Claire Rosser, Lead Team Manager and Gill Jacob, Assistant Team Manager.
Head Coach Stuart McNarry from Swim Wales said: “We have selected a very strong team of swimmers to travel to Samoa. Not only have they performed well at recent events, they are dedicated to their training in preparation for the Youth Games.
“Having the chance to compete in Samoa will be invaluable to these young swimmers as they look ahead to the main Games in Gold Coast Australia in 2018. We wish them all the very best.”
Swimming is one of the three events in which young Welsh athletes will compete at the fifth Commonwealth Youth Games. The weightlifting team was announced in April, with the tennis squad to be selected and announced over coming weeks.
