Bangor weightlifter chosen as Wales flag bearer at Commonwealth Youth Games

Weightlifter Catrin Jones has been chosen to carry the flag for Wales at the Samoa Commonwealth Youth Games opening ceremony tomorrow (Saturday, 5 September).

Catrin, 16 from Bangor, holds the British youth record in the 44kg category and is also the Welsh Senior Champion in the 48kg category. Only last month, she smashed the snatch, C&J and total records at the British Junior and Under 20s Championships in Crystal Palace.

Prof Nichola Phillips, Wales Chef de Mission at the Samoa Youth Games said: “Catrin has shown outstanding performance this year, breaking British records and reaching the top 8 at the IWF World Youth Championships in Peru back in April. She is the highest world ranked weightlifter for her age group and is showing massive potential casino for future medal success.

“We wish Catrin, and the rest of Team Wales, all the best when the competing starts on Monday. I have no doubt that it will be an amazing experience for them, starting with the opening ceremony tomorrow which promises to be a great show.”

Catrin is one of 15 young Welsh Commonwealth hopefuls who arrived in Samoa on Wednesday ahead of the opening ceremony tomorrow. Competing will start on Monday, 7 September, with the closing ceremony on Friday, 11 September. Team Wales will compete in swimming, tennis, weightlifting and archery.
