New intern joins Team Wales for 2021/2022!

Aakshi Sharma will join us for the academic year and help with #B2022 preparations

Every year, we join forces with the University of South Wales to give students the opportunity to work with us at Commonwealth Games Wales. The internship gives valuable experience across multiple areas from Marketing and Event Management, to sport and Digital PR.

The placement is part of the Commonwealth Games Federation eqUIP internship scheme which we have successfully been involved with for seven years.

The interns we have at Team Wales have always been a core part of the team, and their input is invaluable. One lucky intern even came out to work at the 2018 Gold Coast Games!

With less than a year to go, these next few months will be a very busy but hugely exciting time, and Aakshi will have the opportunity to work on numerous areas from media, school engagement and operational planning.

Meet Aakshi…

Q: Hi Aakshi! Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you’re studying at University of South Wales

A: I’m an international student from India – born and raised in Delhi. Delhi has shaped me into becoming a vibrant and more independent person. Growing up, I was Sports Captain at my school and I’ve also got a Black Belt in Karate! I love to cook and paint in my free time, I love being on Instagram and I recently setup a fundraiser, called FundRace, which helps underprivileged athletes have access to funds that will support their career.

I’m currently in my third year at University of South Wales, studying BA (Hons) Business and Management. I’ve been studying topics such as Human Resources Management, Marketing, Supply Chain Management, Business Ethics and Sustainability, International Business and much more. On a personal level, my interest lies with Event Management and Marketing, and I’m looking forward to pursuing a career in Digital Marketing and Social Media.

Q: Why did you choose to apply for an internship with Team Wales?

A: As I have a keen interest in both marketing and event, the internship will allow me to gain experience within both fields. This role will offer me incredible hands-on experience and challenge me to perform and deliver at the highest level. The skills I would acquire from the internship would complement my studies where I have gained theoretical knowledge in both events and marketing, and will allow me to put it into practice too. With a background in sport, I was instantly attracted to the role with Commonwealth Games as in my eyes, there was no bigger (or better!) stage for me to showcase my abilities. And now I get to be part of the prestigious Team Wales!

Q: And how will you take your career prospects and adapt it for your role with Team Wales?

A: I’ll be working with Team Wales as a Marketing and Events Intern, which will allow me to experience a whole host of responsibilities such as interviewing athletes, hosting school engagement sessions and liaising with NGB’s in the lead up to the Games. I’ll also be working across Team Wales’ social media channels, creating content and helping to increase their digital presence. The internship will also give me opportunities to put my planning and organisation skills into practice by researching and gathering data.

Aakshi will intern with us until 2022 and we’re really excited to have her on the team as our preparations for Birmingham continue. It’s going to be a busy year for Aakshi, watch this space!

Keep an eye out for our other talented interns over the coming weeks…
