The Queen’s Baton Relay will begin it’s journey in Anglesey on June 29th travelling through Wales over five days.
Her Majesty The Queen launched the Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace in October last year.
The Baton will arrive in North Wales from Northern Ireland, travelling to towns, villages and key landmarks across North, Mid and South Wales. The Baton will then be handed over to the host nation, England, ahead of the Opening Ceremony of Birmingham 22 on July 28th.
During the Relay, Commonwealth Games Wales will support and encourage focus on youth and sustainability, address key concerns about the environment, and will also use the power of sport and community as a platform to improve levels of physical activity after the pandemic across the Country.
The first Queens Baton Relay was from Buckingham Palace to Cardiff for the 1958 Commonwealth Games. The Queens Baton relay is now a tradition that celebrates, connects and excites communities from across the Commonwealth during the build up to the Games. The Queen’s Baton will visit all 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth for 294 days, covering 140,000 kilometres.
The Baton was created in West Midlands, combining art, technology, and science. Made from copper, aluminium and steel, the Baton also features a platinum strand in homage to Her Majesty The Queen in her Platinum Jubilee year. It is also equipped with cutting-edge technology; 360 degree-camera, heart rate monitor, atmospheric sensors and LED lighting.
Chris Jenkins, Commonwealth Games Wales CEO “The Queens Baton Relay is such an important event for us. It’s more than just a Relay. It’s an opportunity for us to visit communities across Wales, to use our fortunate position as a voice for the athletes, to get community support for our team as we go into a Games, and also an opportunity for us to support important world wide issues such as the environment, sustainability and encouraging more physical activity.“
