Team Wales celebrated at 10 Downing Street

It’s not every day you get an invite to join the Prime Minister for an evening reception!

On June 4th 2018, Team Wales were invited along to 10 Downing Street for a private reception to celebrate the home nation success at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast 2018.

Ten Team Wales medallists, along with Chef de Mission Nicola Phillips joined Theresa May behind the famous black door to enjoy some drinks, canapés and a speech from the Prime Minister herself. She said:

“The Gold Coast was a record breaking Games for our home nations, not to mention double medals for some including Team Wales’ Olivia Breen.

As athletes, you inspired us back home- many of us staying up late or getting up early to watch the events in awe. Not only that, you leave a great legacy, one we will build on in 2022 when the Commonwealth Games take place in Birmingham.”

Bethan Davies, Bronze medallist Race Walker for Wales said:

“It’s an honour to be invited to number ten along with the other home nations, England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. It’s lovely to see everyone in their kit again, it’s a bit like a reunion!

Hearing Theresa May talk about everyone’s achievements was lovely- you forget while you’re competing that there’s thousands of people at home cheering you on. That’s what will be great about Birmingham 2022- in my experience the home crowds are unlike anywhere else and it really makes it special when you compete so close to home.”
