Team Wales DAY 9 Summary
Wales continue to pick up medals on day 9!
- Gold for Gemma Frizelle in Rhythmic Gymnastics – Hoop.
- Three bronze medals in the ring for Team Wales.
Boxing
An incredible day for Welsh boxing. First up, Jake Dodd claimed the bronze medal in is flyweight bout. Then 2018 silver medalist, Rosie Eccles showed great intensity and power to progress to the final once again, in hope to go on better from Gold Coast.
In the afternoon, Owain Harris-Allen looked to book his Final place but unfortunately, lost out to Ghana’s Abraham Mensah to settle for bronze.
Following Allan, the Taylor Bevan was up next who has had an incredible games so far, even getting the nod from Eddie Hearn. Bevan booked his place in the final after beating England’s Aaron Bowen.
Lastly, it was the twins time in the ring. Up first, Garan Croft, who fought hard against Northern Ireland’s Aidan Walsh, however it wasn’t to be.
Finishing the evening session for Wales was Twin brother Ioan Croft. Who became the third Welsh Boxing finalist of the day! After beating England’s Tyler Jolly.
Rhythmic Gymnastics
In a stunning hoop final, Gemma Frizelle pulled off a near flawless routine (28.700) to earn gold.
Wrestling
In the second and final day of wrestling, Curtis Dodge fought in the Men’s Freestyle 74kg division. He lost to South Africa’s Arno van Zijl in the opening round and did not make it to repechage.
Athletics
The morning session was packed with Welsh interest at a sun kissed Alexander Stadium.
Heather Lewis posted a new British record of 45:09.19 in the Women’s 10,000m Race Walk, finishing in fifth place ahead of Bethan Davies. No medal on this occasion, but there was a season best time for the bronze medalist in Gold Coast four years ago (45:45.59).
The Men’s 1500m was one of the most competitive races of the competition, boasting a world-class field that included Cardiff-born Jake Heyward. There were eight personal and two season bests plus a Games record by the eventual winner Oliver Hoare.
Heyward finished fifth after an extraordinary run to post a new PB with a time of 3:31.08, a new Welsh record. It was also the eight fastest-ever run by a UK athlete.
“It was unbelievable today,” he said afterwards.
“The crowd was fantastic. Obviously I wanted to get a medal for Team Wales but it didn’t quite go my way. I’ve seen so many Welsh flags and everyone was cheering my name which was fantastic.”
In the Hammer, Osian Jones ended his third Commmonwealth Games in sixth position, throwing 69.15 on the day. Teammate Jac Palmer came 11th with a best attempt of 66.63.
And Jonathan Hopkins went in the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase and took ninth position with a time of 9:06.95.
Lawn bowls
It was the bronze medal playoff for our men’s 4 side of Jarred Breen, Owain Dando,
Jon Tomlinson and Ross Owen. A strong start for Wales saw them take an early lead but they eventually lost to a dominant England side 17-12 to finish the competition in 4th place and conclude Wales’ presence in the competition
