Team Wales secure Table Tennis qualification for Birmingham!
Table Tennis Wales have guaranteed their place in Birmingham confirming Callum Evans as the first athlete to be named in Team Wales
The Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis event will be held at the NEC (National Exhibition Centre) on from the first day of competition on July 29th 2022.
The Women’s team have also secured their place for Birmingham, with the athletes being confirmed and announced later in the summer.
Table Tennis Wales CEO Rhian Pearce said; “We are delighted to announce that both the women’s team and Callum Evans have qualified for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. We have focused on building on our achievements from the Gold Coast Games and I’m proud of the commitment and resilience that our coaches and players have shown over the past few years, despite the challenges of the pandemic. Representing Wales at a Commonwealth Games is a huge accolade for our players and doing this at a ‘home games’ in Birmingham means that they can share this moment with more family and friends. Preparations are underway for an intensive programme of training and competition to give the players the best chance of success.”
Team Wales finished 7th at last Games in Gold Coast 2018, and with a similar size team going into Birmingham, they are hoping to echo the success of 4 years go;
Team Wales Chef de Mission Nicola Phillips said “It’s exciting to see us starting to announce the sports that have qualified. We’ve had Hockey and Netball already and today it’s Table Tennis’ turn to take the spotlight. They had such a positive impact at the last Games, and with the calibre of athletes they have again this year, I’m looking forward to seeing what they can do in a few months.”
Commonwealth Games CEO Chris Jenkins said “It’s hard to believe 4 years ago today it was the opening ceremony in Australia, and today we are starting to announce teams and athletes for Birmingham. Table Tennis Wales have kept their focus throughout this challenging period and their qualification to the Games show’s their strength and commitment. We’d like to congratulate Table Tennis Wales on securing their places to, once again, be part of Team Wales at the Commonwealth Games.”
