Tuesday April 19th marks 100 days to go until Birmingham 2022
With only 100 days to go until Birmingham 2022, here’s a reminder of what to expect over the next few months…
Team Wales’s campaign ‘The summit of our aspirations’ was launched last October on 300 days to go. The campaign focuses on building a strong and united environment, supporting the team on their journey to Birmingham, and capturing the stories that drives the athletes and support staff to achieve their aspirations and reach their ‘summit’.
Renowned poet, Eurig Salisbury, was commissioned to write a poem especially for Team Wales entitled ‘Rise’, with Welsh Hollywood actor Matthew Rhys lending his voice to the powerful film. You can view the film here
The Birmingham 2022 Games will take place between 28th July and 8th August, with the Opening Ceremony being staged at the Alexander Stadium on 28th July.
This year’s games will be held in venues across the Midlands, including the Alexander Stadium, Coventry Stadium & Arena, Edgbaston Stadium, the NEC, University of Birmingham, Warwick, whilst the track cycling will be held at the Lee Valley Velopark in London.
The event features 26 sporting events, including Aquatics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Rugby Sevens and volleyball. For the first time women’s T20 cricket, 3 x 3 Basketball and 3 x 3 Wheelchair Basketball has been included into the sports programme, with the 2022 Games offering the largest para-sports inclusion in Commonwealth history.
So far Team Wales have announced successful team qualification for Netball, men and women’s Hockey, and women’s Table Tennis, as well as Callum Evans being named as the first athlete heading to Birmingham in the men’s Table Tennis singles. The full team will be announced in June this summer.
Team Wales Chef de Mission Nicola Phillips said “It’s hard to believe that exactly 4 years ago we were in the Gold Coast, and now it’s 100 days until the Birmingham Games begins. I was so proud to be Team Wales’s Chef de Mission in 2018, and even more so this year, having seen what all the athletes and support staff have gone through to ensure they are on form for the Games is remarkable. I can’t wait to support the team in exactly 100 days.“
Prior to the Games in July, the Queen’s Baton Relay will begin it’s journey through Wales, being the final destination ahead of returning to England and back up to Birmingham ready for the Opening Ceremony.
