200 days to go!
With only 200 days to go until #B2022, today’s milestone gives an opportunity to reflect on Wales’ history at the Commonwealth Games, and the journey ahead towards Birmingham 2022.
The Games which began in 1930 and named the British Empire Games will host the event in Birmingham this July, which is the only inclusive major multi-sport event of its kind, bringing athletes and para athletes together as one team across 19 sports. This will be the 22nd Commonwealth Games, and Team Wales is proud to have taken part in every Games since its launch in Canada 92 years ago.
Gold Coast 2018 was Wales’ most successful Games, with the Team winning an impressive 10 gold medals and 36 medals in total. With Birmingham a little closer to home, support will undoubtedly be stronger than ever and an opportunity for friends, family and supporters to enjoy the international sporting spectacle.
#B2022 brings with it new and exciting changes to the Commonwealth Games sports line-up. This year, there will be more para sport events than ever before, which includes the addition of 3 x 3 Wheelchair Basketball.
Marking another historical moment, there will also be more medals for women than men at the Games, with 136 opportunities to win a spot on the podium. Birmingham 2022 will have the largest female sports programme in history, which includes Women’s T20 Cricket for the first time.
“It’s hard to believe we are counting down with just 200 days to go. It only felt like yesterday we were marking 1 year to go. It’s undoubtedly been a strange journey for everyone going into the Games but the resilience and dedication we have seen from the athletes and the NGBs is remarkable. We can’t wait to bring the team together, to support, motivate and celebrate each other in Birmingham.” Nicola Phillips, Team Wales Chef de Mission
Over the coming months, Team Wales looks forward to announcing the team and continuing the exciting journey to Birmingham!
