Team Wales celebrate Eid al-Adha

Commonwealth Games Wales are working with ‘Umbrella Faith’ to provide Team Wales with branded prayer mats for its staff and athletes.

Sumaya Khan, a Marketing Intern at Commonwealth Games Wales was presented earlier this week with the prayer mat from ‘Umbrella Faith’ CEO Sadique Maskeen ahead of today’s celebrations.

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most significant celebrations in the Islamic calendar and will be celebrated by millions of Muslim’s across the World.

Sumaya said ‘To celebrate Eid Al-Adha, I will gather with family and friends to partake in the joyous festivities. The day begins with prayers at the mosque, where the atmosphere is filled with a sense of unity and devotion. After the prayers, we exchange warm greetings, embracing one another and offering heartfelt wishes for a blessed Eid. Delicious meals are prepared and shared, showcasing traditional dishes. It is a time for generosity and giving, as we distribute food and gifts to the less fortunate, reinforcing the spirit of compassion and gratitude that underpins this special occasion.

As a Muslim, receiving a prayer mat from Team Wales holds great significance for me. It symbolizes the acceptance and respect for diverse religious and cultural practices within the team. This gesture not only acknowledges the importance of Eid Al-Adha but also demonstrates the spirit of inclusivity and understanding that the Commonwealth Games embody. Having a prayer mat from Team Wales provides me with a sense of belonging and reassurance, knowing that my faith and traditions are respected and honoured. It serves as a reminder of the unity that can be achieved through embracing diversity, fostering a harmonious and supportive environment for all athletes and team members.’

The prayer mats will be available for athletes and support staff at every Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games. Team Wales are committed to ensuring that all athletes and stakeholders feel welcome at all times.
