Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay Welsh Route Announced
The Birmingham 2022 Queen’s Baton Relay is on the way to Wales!
Ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games this July, the Queen’s Baton Relay will travel through Wales before heading into England and finally up to Birmingham for the Opening Ceremony on July 28th at the Alexander Stadium.
The Wales leg will begin in Anglesey on June 29th after coming in from Northern Ireland, and will travel through Wales for five days, visiting towns, villages, and key landmarks across North, West and South Wales.
The Queen’s Baton Relay was launched on October 7th last year by The Queen, in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace. The Baton is visiting all 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth for 294 days, covering 140,000 kilometres.
The Queen’s Baton Relay first took place in 1958 at the Commonwealth Games in Cardiff, and this year’s Relay will mark its 16th year. The Queen’s Baton Relay is a tradition that celebrates, connects, and excites communities from across the Commonwealth in the build up to the Games.
The journey will encourage focus on youth and sustainability, and learn about projects in Wales aiming to further promote an eco-friendly environment. The Queen’s Baton Relay will also give Commonwealth Games Wales the opportunity to promote and encourage the health and social benefits of sport to communities across the Country.
Chris Jenkins, Commonwealth Games Wales CEO said “The planning that goes into organising the Queen’s Baton Relay, here in Wales, takes months of discussions and visits. We have been working closely with Local Authority event leads to deliver an exciting Relay, with Baton Bearers reflecting all communities across Wales, and it’s certainly an opportunity for us to promote the wonderful events and projects happening across the country. We have always had very strong support and enthusiasm for the QBR here, and this is a perfect opportunity to really get our supporters excited for the Games that are literally days away.”

Wales is the penultimate destination on a journey of 72 nations and territories of the Commonwealth, and the Baton will bring with it a wealth of stories from Batonbearers in the communities it has previously visited. It’s really exciting to see the specific locations announced. We can’t wait to showcase the incredible projects at each visit, and I hope residents of these communities look forward to experiencing the Baton in just over three months’ time.”
