CGW reacts to news that Durban will no longer host 2022 Games
The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) today (Monday, 13 March 2017) announced that the 2022 Commonwealth Games will no longer be held in the South African city of Durban, stating that the required criteria to host the Games had not been met.
The search for a new host city has already begun, and the CGF are confident that an alternative will be found. An announcement is expected by the end of the year.
Reacting to the news, Helen Phillips, Chair of Commonwealth Games Wales said:
“We are disappointed that the 2022 Commonwealth Games will no longer be held in Durban. It would have been great to see South Africa host the Games, and we will be supporting them in any future bids.
“In the meantime, we have absolute confidence that the CGF will be working with relevant Commonwealth Games Associations to determine a suitable solution for the 2022 Games.
“Whatever city or country ends up hosting the 2022 Games, we will be wishing them well and working closely with them to deliver a successful event for all.”
Helen added: “Our focus is always on sending a fantastic team of our very best elite Welsh athletes to compete at the Commonwealth Games and to build on Team Wales’ excellent track record, wherever the Games are held.
“Preparations for the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games are going ahead very well and this week’s launch of the QBR and announcement of the route in Wales is another exciting step in our journey to Gold Coast.”
