Commonwealth Games Wales pays tribute to Gareth John MBE

It is with sadness and condolence to the family that the Commonwealth Games Wales team pay tribute to current Vice President and past CGW Chair and friend, Gareth John MBE, who has passed away.

Gareth served as Chair for Commonwealth Games Wales for two Games cycles from 2005 until 2013, developing and inspiring the organisation and its team members and athletes.

Gareth embodied the values of the Commonwealth Games, promoting inclusion and equality through his dedicated work as President for Disability Sport Wales.

In 2009 Gareth was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, recognition so richly deserved.

Anne Ellis OBE, Commonwealth Games Wales President said:

“Gareth was a remarkable person who was instrumental in the modernisation of Commonwealth Games Wales. Without his passion and drive for equality in sport, Commonwealth Games Wales would look much different to the success it is today.

We will forever be thankful for the hard work and contribution he has made to Welsh sport. Condolences to his wife and family at this sad time.”

Chris Jenkins, Commonwealth Games Wales CEO said:

“Gareth John, Chair of Commonwealth Games Wales (CGW) from 2005 until 2013, was instrumental in transforming into an athlete centred organisation.

He led CGW into the Melbourne Games and brought stability to the organisation after Melbourne. He always placed the athlete experience first and his roles as Chair of Disability Sport Wales and Commonwealth Games Wales mirrored the Games where para-sport is integrated into the Games.

Gareth was always calm, supportive and used his wisdom and experience to lead Commonwealth Games Wales. He will be sorely missed.”

Our thoughts are with Gareth’s family and friends at this difficult time.

Diolch o galon am bopeth, Gareth.
