Gethin Jones joins Team Wales on Gold Coast as Official Attaché for Commonwealth Games

Date: 28th Mar 2018

TV broadcaster and ‘Strictly: It Takes Two’ host Gethin Jones arrives in Gold Coast today after accepting an invitation to become an Attaché for Team Wales at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Proud Welshman Gethin will spend 11 days on the Gold Coast helping officials, volunteers and athletes to deliver what they hope will be the most successful overseas Games ever for Team Wales.

As the official Attaché, his role will be to engage with Team Wales’ supporters and corporate networks during the Games, and to help create additional interest in the Team through the media and social channels.

Alongside Team Ambassadors – Becky James, Christian Malcolm and Elin Haf Davies – and Captain Non Stanford, he will be flying the flag for Wales, raising the profile of Welsh sport internationally, and aiming to inspire Team Wales supporters on the Gold Coast and back home in Wales.

An ex professional rugby player and a keen adventurer, Gethin brings with him a love of sport combined with a huge passion for Wales. Gethin said: “I’m honoured to take on this special role with Team Wales. There’s a real buzz surrounding the Commonwealth Games as we embark on the journey to the Gold Coast.

“I could not be prouder to stand alongside Non, Becky, Christian and Elin in supporting our fantastic athletes. We are a proud nation, and I have no doubt that everyone at home will be staying up late to catch all the action!”

Team Wales Chef de Mission, Prof. Nicola Phillips, who is already out in Australia preparing for next week’s Games said: “We are really excited that Gethin has accepted the invitation to be Team Wales attaché for the Gold Coast 2018 Games and are looking forward to welcoming him in the Gold Coast to join us.

“He will bring an added dimension to the team that will highlight the athletes and the stories behind their journeys to be part of Team Wales. We want to inspire people back home, as well as the team around us and Gethin will help us do that.”

Commonwealth Games Wales Chair, Helen Phillips MBE said: “Our Chef de Mission and the rest of the ‘team behind the team’ have worked tirelessly to prepare for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. With only a week to go, the final touches are being put in place to guarantee that our athletes have the best possible chance to compete to their very best.

“Having Gethin with us on the Gold Coast as the official Team Wales attaché will be fantastic, and will help maintain morale and team spirit throughout the Games. A huge thanks to him – and our other Ambassadors and supporters – for getting behind our athletes.”

The Games start with the opening ceremony on 4th April before 11 days of competition, with the closing ceremony on April 15th.
